The
DANIEL REYNOLDS

THE VILLAGE OF WELLINGTON

It had originally been called "Smokeville" after the nickname "Old Smoke" given to the village's first white settler, Daniel Reynolds, a fur trader and friend of the local Indians. His restored home may still be seen. It is known as Manor House, a cobblestone home built in 1786.

By the 1850s Wellington offered a full range of stores and services with a population of about 500. The port became the major stimulus for the continuing economic growth.
